In preparation for his arrival, the FOCUS Churches have joined together to read one of his books, Jesus for President. I admit I didn't know about the Woody Guthrie song "Christ for President."
When I first read the title of the book, I wasn't sure what to think. I mean, didn't Jesus specifically not want to be in power? Wasn't that the whole point of his discussion with Pilate and the fact that he was crucified instead of taking over political power from the Romans?
And then I read the book. The crux (pun intended) of the book is the interplay between power and powerlessness. Throughout the Bible God plays with and thwarts our own structures of power, ultimately choosing powerlessness in the person of Jesus.
I haven't actually finished the book yet. Tomorrow is only the second meeting of our book discussion. Perhaps you can join with me in the discussion of how our Christian faith informs our interactions with the Powers in the world.
