I love that image: that we are a society in constant movement. How invigorating! How like the Holy Spirit - impossible to pin down, contagious in windswept movement.
Our culture(s) are also constantly in motion. Recently a friend asked me how using the term "multicultural" is different from "multiracial", or is "multicultural" just a more politically correct version of saying the same thing.
Culture and race are very different things, though both are social constructs that we define however we want. Depending on who you ask to define race, they will come up with 5 different races in the world or 5,000. When we are speaking about immigrants especially, there may be one generation who identifies with the culture of their country of origin and then another generation, of the same family or lineage, who identifies with the culture of the new country they now live in.
Language or accent can also be a strong indicator of culture. Individuals from the Caribbean will speak differently than their children raised in the Bronx. An older person who speaks primarily Chinese may depend on a family member to translate for them wherever they go. Each person stands in two cultures, but they experience them very differently.
As we at Westminster live out our call to a multicultural witness, we recognize that our identities and our cultures are constantly in motion. We can trust the Holy Spirit, who is also moving constantly, to guide us through new territory and moments of mystery.
