In this post, I'd like to set the scene of my work. I do not have an office full of co-workers. Even in a church with a staff as large as ours, I am often one of two or three people in the office at a given time. Pastors of smaller churches are usually the only person in the building - working completely by themselves. Here, we don't have a buzz around the office: sounds of the phone ringing or the copy machine churning, people walking to and fro.
My office is located just a short distance from the sanctuary where we hold worship. Convenient for Sunday morning, yes, with the added bonus that I get to listen to organ practice as a backdrop to my work during the week.
What a blessing! I listen to quiet, contemplative pieces designed to speak softly to people as they pray and boisterous, vibrant postludes that send people from church filled with the Holy Spirit.
What other profession works to the backdrop of fantastic live music played for them? Maybe if you work in a coffee shop during an exceptionally good open mic night. Or if you work in the music profession, of course.
The worship music reminds me that I am not in an office like any other. I do not have a cubicle or work at mindless tasks from 9-5 then clock out. What a blessing it is to have such a glorious soundtrack to my days!
