At the African Style Watch Night Service, church members prepared piping, spicy meat pies like they make in Ghana. Since I'm no food critic, I lack the flowery vocabulary to describe how good they are. I'll just leave it at Mmmmm.....
After the turn of the New Year and the end of the joyous worship service, I casually asked if there were any extra meat pies that I could take home. Our gifted cooks had already wrapped some up for me. A wonderful start to the New Year!
In the Gospel accounts, Jesus eats a lot. He sits at table with rich and poor, with blatant sinners and holy leaders. He received hospitality everywhere he went. I wonder, did he feel humbled as well?
Yesterday in church we celebrated communion. I find it poignant that Jesus chose a meal to be the primary sign of his love for us. True community still blossoms around the sharing of a meal, be it communion or those delicious meat pies.
