Many voices came together to speak after having been silenced for too long. Formerly incarcerated individuals spoke about the impact incarceration has had on their lives. Advocates spoke about the larger community impact, including on families and children.
When Dr. West stepped to the microphone, he called attention to the great harmony of voices raised that day, and how many more voices out there are being silenced. Then he quoted scripture, saying that even if all of us were silenced the stones would shout out for justice.
The Gospel of Luke and Dr. West are both pointing to a movement of something bigger than the sum of our individual parts. You know what I mean if you've ever been in a conversation and kept a comment to yourself only to hear someone else say the exact thing you were thinking. The message was there in the room and just begging for some way to get out.
Dr. West is known worldwide as a faithful advocate precisely because he speaks the message the Holy Spirit gives him to speak. Would that we all could be so brave.
