I'm sure many adults who work with young people think their young people are extraordinary. But, I know the youth at my church are extraordinary.
Last Saturday, a group of 12 adults and 4 youth got together to talk about the direction the youth ministry will take in the future. We packed a lot into a few short hours together. At the end of our time we had drafts of a mission statement, values statement and measurable goals for the next three years. I was really impressed with how well the group worked together and rose to the challenge set before them.
I was most impressed with the youth themselves. They engaged with adults, spoke up for themselves and closed the day with prayer.
The best part was when they surprised us. One young person, when asked what he wanted to take with him from years of youth group, replied, "A feeling that I matter and am part of something greater than myself." Wow!
When asked about attending worship, another youth said that she can follow the messages and really enjoys being in church.
A third added coyly, "We know more than you think we know." She's right. We cannot underestimate their capacity for commitment, knowledge or depth.
I consider it a privilege to serve among such wonderful youth and the other adults committed to their well-being. The coming months and years will launch a new phase in the youth ministry at Westminster. These youth will match any commitment the church makes to them.
Let's dream big.
